Happy Cultural Worker’s Day!

Cultural Worker’s Day is celebrated today on the vast territory of Russia – this holiday unites people of different creative professions and spheres, highlighting the unity of the cultural space of our country. Culture shapes the self-awareness of generations and nations, and, according to academician Dmitry Likhachev, is “the main purport and global value of human life.”

Government officials of the Russian Federation congratulated workers in the cultural sector on their professional holiday:

Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin:
“Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy wrote: “Art is one of the means of uniting people.” Indeed, thanks to your talent and mastery, the world is becoming a better place. You create beauty and take care of the beautiful, fill life with vivid impressions, emotions, and harmony.
The sphere of culture is always in the focus of attention of the government . Today, theaters, museums, cinemas, philharmonic halls, and libraries are being renovated in all regions of the country. Cultural development centers are opening in small towns and villages. The “Pushkin Card” opens to young people the opportunity to visit exhibitions, performances, and concerts more often. The necessary support is also provided to creative groups.”

Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Olga Lyubimova:
“Culture is a sphere of life that reacts sensitively to both joyful and sad events.
These days, when the tragedy that recently happened resonates with pain in everyone’s heart, memorial events are held in cultural institutions. And I‘d like to thank my colleagues for this spirit of unity and solidarity, which gives warmth and hope.
Hundreds of thousands of people work in our country in the domain of culture. They are at work every day – in museums, theaters and philharmonic societies, libraries and cultural centers, educational and scientific institutions, circuses and film studios. They share their talent and creativity with the public, preserving our heritage and historical memory.
Dear colleagues, today, on Cultural Worker’s Day, I want to say “thank you” for your talent and daily work, for your help and support to those who need it most particularly.”

Premieres of 15 new productions were held in Russian theaters abroad

ANO for promoting concert activities Russian Seasons renders support for Russian theaters abroad within the framework of the Federal project “Development of Cultural Dialogue”, which is a part of the state program “Development of Culture”.

In 2023, premieres of theater productions created with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation took place in 12 cities of eight countries – Abkhazia, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, South Ossetia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

From September to December 2023, 15 foreign theaters showed 15 premieres! Productions based on the works of A. S. Pushkin, whose 225th anniversary will be celebrated in 2024, and A. N. Ostrovsky, whose 200th anniversary the world theater community is celebrating this year, were offered to the attention of foreign theatergoers and fans of Russian classics. The works of both classics do not lose their relevance to our time and are extremely popular among foreign audiences.

The literary works of A. S. Pushkin were eagerly sought by the theater directors –  from the mystical short story, told by the poet in the Karamzins’ salon in 1828 and recorded by Vladimir Titov, who was among the guests that very evening, and fairy tales, on which many generations of residents of the neighboring countries grew up, to the world famous novel in verse Eugene Onegin.

The State Youth Theater of Uzbekistan staged the biographical play Pushkin is Alive. Excerpts from documents, letters and memories of contemporaries alternate with scenes from the most striking Pushkin’s works, which burst into the biographical story line of the show.

The directors who worked the plays by A. N. Ostrovsky picked up his two famous comedies for their productions: The Forest – one of the most labyrinthine works of the great playwright in terms of story-telling,  and Wolves and Sheep, the exciting plot of which was based on real events.

Soloists, dancers and musicians of Helicon opera and Astana opera participated in the closing gala of the Russian seasons in Kazakhstan

On 9 December the grand finale of the Russian Seasons in Kazakhstan took place. This was the gala concert Duet of Two Capitals, prepared by the Helikon Opera Theater under the direction of Dmitry Bertman jointly with the team of the Astana Opera, which hosted the gala. In 2023, the Russian Seasons project featuring more than 20 cultural events was held in Kazakhstan for the first time. The implementation of the project was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aida Balaeva, noted in her welcoming speech that the Russian Seasons international project carries out an important mission that unites humanity:

“The international cultural project Russian Seasons was launched on stage of the leading theater of Kazakhstan – Astana Opera State Opera and Ballet Theater, which is the cultural heritage of our country, on 2 March this year. The project is rooted in Sergei Diaghilev’s  Russian Seasons that was founded and run by the great impresario at the beginning of the twentieth century and contributed greatly to the development and popularization of Russian culture. During 2023, our Russian colleagues presented a series of cultural events that left an indelible impression in the hearts of Kazakhstanis.

This is the key to close friendly relations between our countries. Indeed, culture plays a vital role in uniting humanity today. It unites people of different nationalities, religions, languages, allowing them to find common ground and understand each other. Culture becomes a bridge that connects different cultural groups and promotes intercultural dialogue and understanding.”

The concert Duet of Two Capitals was part of the closing ceremony of the Russian Seasons, organized by the Helikon-Opera Moscow musical theater under the direction of Dmitry Bertman together with the team of the Astana-Opera State Opera and Ballet Theater. The two wonderful conductors – the Сhief conductor of Helikon-Opera, winner of the City of Moscow Award Valery Kiryanov and conductor of the Astana Opera Ruslan Baimurzin – were leading the program.

“Musical art is a powerful force that invokes noble hopes and aspirations and awakens the most tender and sublime feelings in our hearts,” – noted Aida Balaeva,

Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Andrey Malyshev thanked Kazakhstan for the warm welcome throughout the touring year:

Russian Seasons opened an opportunity to bring the maximum number of the best Russian companies to friendly Kazakhstan and show our neighbors and friends the richness of Russian culture. I really hope that today’s concert dedicated to friendship between the two countries will not end our cooperation but is just a good start. I assure you that in any city in the Russian Federation we are always waiting for our friends from Kazakhstan with love and with open hearts. We have great, great plans. Good luck!”.

Astana welcomed Helikon stars – laureates of international competitions Yulia Shcherbakova, Valentina Gofer, Shota Chibirov, Maxim Perebeinos. They performed together with the soloists of the Astana Opera, among whom were Honored Workers of the Republic of Kazakhstan Zhupar Gabdullina, Saltanat Akhmetova, Azamat Zheltyrguzov, Medet Chotabaev and others.

“It is very important that in such uneasy times we enrich ourselves culturally. Russia is our neighbor, a brotherly country. And such cultural exchanges should happen often. Art has no boundaries,” said Azamat Zheltyrguzov, director of the opera company at Astana Opera.

The voices of soloists from Moscow and Astana merged in the famous duets from the operas by Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Rossini, Dargomyzhsky, Bizet, Puccini, Offenbach, and the Muscovites for the first time in their lives sang in the Kazakh language. The concert opened with Polonaise from Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. The project was developed by an artist from St. Petersburg Nika Velegzhaninova. The Kazakh capital’s audience enjoyed seeing theatrical costumes created according to sketches by Alexander Golovin, Lev Bakst, Mikhail Larionov and Sergei Sudeikin. We were glad to have the opportunity to represent the Arkhangelsk region at the international level and to be part of such a large-scale and significant project as Russian Seasons,” said the director of the choir, Natalya Asadchik.

During the tour, the group was introduced to the residents of Tashkent by the Governor of the Arkhangelsk region, Alexander Tsybulsky:

The Northern Russian Folk Choir is a unique company that was founded almost a hundred years ago. All this time it has been developing, never interrupting its activities, growing with new traditions and voices. Today we all have a great opportunity here in the south to feel the warm soul of the north, to get acquainted with the song and dance traditions of the Arkhangelsk region,” noted Alexander Tsybulsky.

The Russian Seasons program in Uzbekistan also included an exhibition about the history of the Northern Russian Folk Choir, which revealed the main milestones of its development: the foundation in Veliky Ustyug in 1926 by teacher Antonina Kolotilova, the transformation of an amateur group into a professional company in 1940, receiving the status of “academic” “under the direction of People’s Artist of the USSR Nina Meshko in 1976. On November 15 and 16, on stage of the Russian Drama Theater in Tashkent, the actors of Satyricon performed Jokers based on the play of the same name by Alexander Ostrovsky, staged by Evgeny Marcelli. The next day, on November 17, the Artistic director of the theater Konstantin Raikin performed a solo performance In My Own Voice. The Satyricon tour took place in Tashkent as part of the Big Tour program of the All-Russian tour and concert plan and the international project Russian Seasons, which is held in Uzbekistan with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

“I have a wealth of experience communicating with Tashkent,” noted Konstantin Raikin. – This is a very important place in my professional life and professional memory. This is the city where I gained experience in my youth. I used to come here with concerts and big theater productions. This is why I feel great excitement when I meet again with the city of my springtime. I am extremely happy about our tour here  and hope our contacts with the audience in Tashkent will continue.”

On November 15 and 16, the Satyricon artists performed Evgeniy Marcelli’s production of Jokers, in which Konstantin Raikin played the role of the retired officer Obroshenov. This is a performance-paradox based on Ostrovsky’s play, little known to the audience, but nevertheless comprising the entire world of the playwright. In the Satyricon’s production the director Evgeniy Marcelli introduced to the cast the main characters of four more iconic plays by Ostrovsky – ThunderstormWithout a Dowry, The Forest and The Snow Maiden. The play enlarged in meaning and entered the vast open space of Ostrovsky’s theater. Everything in this performance is part of a game and everyone is a joker, including the higher forces that gave men such a complex and curious phenomenon as life.

“Not everyone is accustomed to such a way of presenting Ostrovsky – modern, fast-paced, without the attributes of the time in which Ostrovsky lived,” suggests the Artistic director of Satyricon. – This is our view of the work of the great playwright; we believe that it should not be so strictly connected with time. His plays are ageless, so what happens in them can happen at any time. We have worked out the formula: “Question: when does this happen? The answer – always. Where does it happen? Everywhere”. This is an everlasting, universal, timeless story.”

On November 16, Konstantin Raikin, Rector of the Higher School of Performing Arts conducted a master class at the VGIK branch in Tashkent.

The second production presented on tour in Tashkent is the solo performance In My Own Voice, in which Konstantin Raikin recites verses by his favorite poets. In the new version of this program, poems by David Samoilov and Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin are heard from the stage, creating a show that Raikin calls “the performance of his life.” He recites poetic lines, as if playing many dramatic roles, preceding them with short stories about the authors and sharing thoughts on life and country.

“Being an artist and performing poetry on stage is a very difficult task. Working in a large hall, holding the attention of the audience alone for two or three hours… My solo performance is part of our repertoire. It is based on poetry, which I love,” said Konstantin Raikin.
