On November 15 and 16, on stage of the Russian Drama Theater in Tashkent, the actors of Satyricon will present a production staged by Evgeny Marcelli Jokers based on the play of the same name by Alexander Ostrovsky. The next day, on November 17, the Artistic director of the theater Konstantin Raikin will appear in a solo performance In My Own Voice. The Satyricon tour will take place in Tashkent as part of the Big Tour program of the All-Russian tour and concert plan and the international project Russian Seasons, which is held in Uzbekistan with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

“This is a performance-paradox based on Ostrovsky’s play, little known to the audience, but nevertheless comprising the entire world of the playwright. Kostantin Raikin plays the leading part of the officer Obroshenkov. In the Satyricon’s production the main characters of four more iconic plays by Ostrovsky – Thunderstorm, Without a Dowry, The Forest and The Snow Maiden – are introduced to the cast . The comedy enlarged in meaning and entered the vast open space of Ostrovsky’s theater. Here everything is part of a game and everyone is a joker, including the higher forces that gave men such a complex and curious phenomenon as life, “ – comments Eugeny Marcelli.
The storyline of the play is about a poor retired officer who is trying to marry off his daughter. It is easier for him to suffer money-caused humiliation under the guise of a joker. It’s getting close to the wedding, but here different love stories intertwine with the action on the stage: from happy love to corrupt, from unrequited to tragic. Stories about love and money in a colorful epic performance, the name of which is Ostrovsky.
In 2020, director Evgeniy Marcelli won the Theatrical Star Audience Award in the “Best Director” category for Jokers. The production was also included in the long list of the Award in two more categories: “Best performance. Big Form” and “Best Supporting Actor” (Denis Sukhanov for the role of Filimon Protasich Khryukov).
IN MY OWN VOICE
A solo performance, in which Konstantin Raikin recites verses by his favorite poets. In the new version of this program, poems by David Samoilov and Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin are heard from the stage, creating a show that Raikin calls “the performance of his life.”
Arkady Raikin once advised Satyricon’s Artistic director to include poetic recitals into his repertoire on a permanent basis: “This will help the audience understand you better and form a “multilayer” view of life.”
Konstantin Raikin recites poetic lines, as if playing many dramatic roles, preceding them with stories about the authors and sharing thoughts on life and country:
“I feel a wave of interest in true poetry. People lack certain vitamins in their spiritual repast, certain good phrases, certain beautiful turns of speech. Read Pushkin – there will be fewer bacilli in the air. It’s like a bell ringing.”
